Everything you need to know about the ADI Part 1 theory test.

You've taken the step to become an ADI and since you've got this far you must be seriously considering it as a career choice. Good for you. We know that starting a new career can be daunting, especially if you're completely new to the sector, so if you have any questions about the ADI Part 1 just get in touch with our team. This section will give you an overview on becoming a driving instructor with a specific focus on the 1st test you'll take - the ADI Part 1.

To become a driving instructor you need to pass 3 exams - Part 1, 2, and 3. Part 1 is a theory test whereas Part 2 and Part 3 will test your practical skills. You need to sit and pass your ADI Part 1 before you can book your ADI Part 2 practical test.

The ADI Part 1 theory test consists of two parts - multiple choice questions and hazard perception. To achieve an overall pass, you'll need to pass both parts. The first part of the theory test allows you to show off what you've learnt by answering multiple choice questions. You'll have 90 minutes for this portion of the theory test. The hazard perception test is next. Just like the Car theory test, there are 14 hazard perception videos. Once the test has ended the test centre staff will give you a letter. This letter will let you know if you've passed or failed. If you're successful and pass the test, you'll be able to book the ADI Part 2 test.

You'll have 90 minutes to complete the multiple choice part of the test. It sounds a long time, right?! But when you're taking the real test, time seems to go quickly. This is why it's important to manage your time effectively and read every question and possible answer.

The ADI Part 1 theory test can be booked with the DVSA and will cost you £81.00. You can take the test as many times as you want. But for the sake of your wallet, don't make failure an option. This is where Driving Theory 4 All can help you.

If you didn't already know, you'll be tested on 4 main topics:

Driving test, disabilities and the law
Publications and instructional techniques
Road procedure
Traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge

The Driving Theory 4 All learning zone has also split the learning material into these 4 main topics, so that you can become familiar with them before you take the real test.

There are a total of 100 multiple choice questions in the real DVSA ADI Part 1 test. The 100 questions you will see are made up of 25 questions from each of the 4 topics.

Still with us? Good. Here comes the slightly confusing bit though. To pass the test you need to score at least 85 out of 100. But you will need to score at least 20 out of the 25 questions in each of the 4 topics.

So, yes this means that if you score at least 85 out of 100 but at the same time fail to score less that 20 in any of the 4 topics, you'll not pass the multiple choice part of the test.

If you thought the scoring for the multiple choice part of the test was complicated, you'll be pleased to hear that the scoring for hazard perception test is much easier to understand.

Like the Car theory test, you'll see 14 hazard perception video clips. 13 of these clips contain 1 developing hazard and 1 clip has 2 developing hazards. A maximum of 5 marks can be achieved for each hazard.

If you're quick with sums, you would have already worked out that the hazard perception test is marked out of 75. But what you probably don't know is that the pass mark is 57. If you achieve this score and pass the multiple choice part of the test, you'll achieve an overall pass for the ADI Part 1 test.

So, to be absolutely clear, to pass the ADI Part 1 theory test you need pass both parts of the test.

If you don't like our driving theory test practice material within 24 hours of signing up, we'll give you a FULL REFUND*
