What is the hazard perception test pass mark?

The hazard perception pass mark depends on the DVSA test you're taking. You'll always need to pass both parts of the theory test (multiple-choice questions and hazard perception) to gain an overall pass.

Test type Hazard perception test pass mark Points available
Car 44 75
Motorcycle 44 75
HGV / LGV (Driver CPC Part 1) 67 100
PCV (Driver CPC Part 1) 67 100
ADI Part 1 57 75

Want to see how close you are to the pass mark? Start with a free test above, then use our full practice tools to keep improving.

What is a developing hazard?

In the hazard perception test, you're not clicking every possible hazard on the road - you're looking for a developing hazard.

A developing hazard is something that would cause you to take action, such as changing speed or direction. For example, a parked car is not a developing hazard until it starts signalling or moving into your path..

How does the scoring work in the hazard perception test?

Each clip contains at least one developing hazard. You score points based on how early you spot the hazard as it starts to develop.

  • You can score up to 5 points per developing hazard.
  • You don't lose points for clicking when you're wrong.
  • You can score zero for a clip if you click continuously or in a pattern.
  • You only get one attempt per clip. You can't review or change your clicks.

Tip: aim for calm, deliberate clicks. If you're unsure, it's better to click thoughtfully than to 'machine-gun' the mouse.

How do I pass the hazard perception test?

  • Practise regularly with the most up-to-date DVSA hazard perception test practice clips so you learn what 'developing' really looks like.
  • Scan early: look far ahead, check mirrors, and watch other road users for clues (brake lights, indicators, pedestrians stepping out).
  • Click at the right moment: not when something could become a hazard, but when it starts to develop and would make you take action.
  • Use a safe clicking rhythm: use deliberate clicks as the hazard develops without clicking in a pattern.
  • Practise under test conditions with no distractions.
