How does this DVSA motorcycle practice hazard perception test work?

The free practice hazard perception test is a short sample designed to help you understand the format and practise your clicking timing.

  • It includes 3 short clips.
  • Each clip contains 1 developing hazard.
  • You can score up to 5 points per hazard (the earlier you spot it developing, the higher the score).
  • You need 9 points or more across the 3 clips to 'pass'.
  • You won't lose points for the occasional wrong click, but avoid clicking continuously or in a pattern.

Passing this free motorcycle practice hazard perception test doesn't guarantee you'll pass the real test, but it'll give you an idea of what to expect in the real test.

How does the DVSA motorcycle hazard perception test work?

In the real DVSA hazard perception test, you watch video clips showing everyday road scenes and click when you spot a developing hazard. A developing hazard is something that would make you take action, such as slowing down, stopping, or changing direction.

You score points based on how early you react as the hazard starts to develop. Each developing hazard is worth up to 5 points. One clip contains 2 developing hazards.

Top tip: you're not trying to click everything you can see. Click calmly and don't click in a rhythm or pattern.

Here's a video explaining how the hazard perception test works

How many hazard perception clips are there in the motorcycle hazard perception test?

For the DVSA motorcycle hazard perception test, you'll watch 14 clips in total. Across the test there are 15 developing hazards (one clip contains 2 hazards).

To pass the hazard perception part, you need at least 44 out of 75.

What you'll see DVSA motorcycle hazard perception test facts
Number of clips 14
Number of developing hazards 15 (including one clip with 2 hazards)
Points per hazard Up to 5
Motorcycle hazard perception pass mark 44 / 75

Top tip: if you're unsure, use a calm 'two-click' approach - one click when you first see it developing and a second click a moment later if it continues. This can help you catch the scoring window without over-clicking.
