Bus and Cycle Signs and Road Markings
Bus and cycle signs and road markings tell drivers, riders and pedestrians how and when buses and bicycles can use
certain lanes, junctions and parts of the road. This page explains what these signs and markings mean, how to
recognise them quickly, and links to every individual road sign and marking in this category so you can revise them
for your car theory test, motorcycle theory test, HGV / LGV theory test, PCV
theory test, or ADI Part 1 theory test.

What are bus and cycle signs and road markings?
Bus and cycle signs and road markings are part of the UK road and traffic sign system used to show where buses
and
cycles have priority, where special lanes begin and end, and where other vehicles are restricted. They help to
keep
vulnerable road users safer and keep traffic flowing smoothly in busy areas.
You'll usually see:
- Bus and cycle lane signs showing which vehicles can use a lane and when.
- Bus gates and bus-only lanes where only buses (and sometimes cycles or taxis) are allowed.
- Cycle symbols and advanced stop lines at traffic lights giving cyclists a safe space in front
of other traffic.
- Road markings such as coloured surfacing, lane arrows and word markings like 'BUS LANE' or
cycle symbols.
Understanding these bus and cycle signs and road markings is essential if you regularly drive near bus routes,
town
centres, cycle lanes or priority junctions - and they can all appear in your DVSA driving theory test and hazard
perception test.
